ATLANTIC GHOST CRABS

Ocypode quadrata

Pale colouration, hence the name, is due to their mostly nocturnal nature. The light colours and usually white (also asymmetrical) claws make them hard to see on sandy beaches, as well as in the water. They are easy to spot once bolting across the beaches, hiding in their burrows underground. Night activity requires excellent sight in the dark, but these crabs also have 360° vision.
