BELCHER'S SEA SNAKE

Hydrophis belcheri

In the seas and oceans, most venomous and poisonous animals have stripes that serve as clear warning signals for predators - do not even think about me! This sea snake’s Latin name comes from the Greek hydro and ophis, meaning water-serpent.  However, there is no mention of the fact that it is by far the most venomous snake in the world. Because of its extremely docile nature, accidents involving humans (that are always fatal) only happen when relentlessly provoked, usually for no reason. Sea snakes have evolved to suit aquatic life; they are brilliant swimmers and rarely go on land, but still need to surface to breath air after 8 hours of diving.
