SPOTTED EAGLE RAYS

Aetobatus narinari

Eagle rays are some of the largest fish in the ray families, right after mantas. They are also globally widespread - living almost around the world in the warm and shallow coastal waters. Unlike stingrays, eagle rays are harmless and remarkably inquisitive creatures. They can often be spotted breaching high above the surface of the water; hence the name. They are also a stunning sights to look at, even when underwater! In Hawaiian they are called ‘hihimanu’, meaning elegant bird. The sympathy must be mutual, since they often stop by divers with the same curious eye that they are being goggled with.
